Since the Peter Ashley Activity Centres (registered charity) began in 1981 at Fort Purbrook, which later expanded to Fort Widley in 1990, a great deal has been achieved in terms of both restoration work and facilities offered at the centres. From derelict shells, the Forts have been brought back to life and now offer a wide range of inclusive, diverse and accessible facilities, activities and learning opportunities.

The centres provide a fantastic mix of physical and academic activities including: Archery, Air Rifle shooting, Assault Courses, Climbing, Horse Riding, Initiative Testing, Holiday Activities, and Team Building.

The Peter Ashley Activity Centres provide unique and interesting venues where both individuals and groups can participate in a variety of activities in an outdoor and historical environment, In the development of the centres, the committee is bringing life back to these Victorian buildings and is preserving them as part of the heritage for the future. The centres are currently seeking funding to build on progress, to improve and expand facilities and further establish the centres as an integral part of the local community. New projects will promote innovative and exciting learning opportunities and include Project ESCAPE which will work with young people across the region particularly the disadvantaged.

Situated on Portsdown Hill with magnificent views of Portsmouth, Southsea and many local tourist attractions, the Forts offer residential packages with dormitory accommodation and a choice of meal arrangements, or camping on the large grassed parade areas.

The centres are open all year round to welcome schools, colleges, clubs, youth groups and individuals of all ages.
